Dr James Pitt
Biography
A graduate of the University of Melbourne, James gained mass spectrometry experience while working at Monash University before taking up a position with the Department of Clinical Biochemistry at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne in 1984. His initial role was in setting up a mass spectrometry facility for inborn errors of metabolism and he was later appointed head of the Metabolic Screening laboratory. During this time he obtained a PhD from La Trobe University using mass spectrometry to study post-translational modifications of viral proteins. In 2000 his laboratory transferred to the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute where he established the expanded newborn screening program using tandem mass spectrometry for Victoria. In 2004 he was appointed head of both the Newborn and Metabolic Screening laboratories. His current research interests focus on using tandem mass spectrometry for urine metabolic screening and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to develop improved tests for inborn errors of metabolism.
