"Coming Together
to Separate"
Biography Originally a graduate from University of Sydney (BSc Hons) and La Trobe
University (PhD), John spent 16 years at Guy’s Hospital, London, working in
the Purine Research Laboratory. During that time, he learnt then established
many HPLC methods, concentrating on purine and pyrimidine bases, nucleosides
and nucleotides. Returning to Australia (Pathology at the Mater Hospital
Brisbane) in 2003, his dual briefs have been to establish - (1) diagnosis of
purine metabolic diseases, including gout, and (2) pharmacogenetics
research. He has recently also taken up a part-time post in Pharmacy at the
University of Queensland. Acknowledging his dual interests, John was invited
in 2004 to sit on one of the Pharmacogenetics Advisory Subcommittees of the
US Food and Drug Administration, and in 2005 to speak in Paris on the
European Union diagnostic standards programme (ERNDIM) for purine and
pyrimidine disorders. John will provide an introduction to the tricky
subject of ion exchange HPLC, including its strengths and pitfalls, using
nucleotides as an example.
